They claim to promote scientifically valid practices in public health. This is the organization that was paid $46,000 to create content for the 4parents.gov site that was originally claimed to have been developed by government health experts. The site created controversy for its bias and misinformation.
The Sexuality Information and Education Council of the United States sent a letter in 2005 to Michael Leavitt, secretary of the Health and Human Services Department. More than 100 organizations signed on, including the American Civil Liberties Union, the Human Rights Campaign and Planned Parenthood. They complained that while the site was supposed to help parents teach their kids about sex, it emphasized teaching abstinence, described condoms as only moderately effective in preventing the transmission of AIDS (contrary to almost all experts who believe that condoms are very effective) and encouraged saving sex for marriage. Very carefully written, the overall message of the site is that sex outside of marriage is very dangerous. Three physicians and a child psychologist analyzed the 4Parents.gov Web site and concluded it made many incorrect assertions about condoms, sexual orientation, single-parent households and the dangers of oral sex.
The site was changed, but recent revisions seem to be reintroducing biased and scientifically unsupportable information. It still overemphasizes claims about depression and drug abuse related to abortion.
NPC promotes the link between breast cancer and abortion, a link that is not scientifically supported and has been throughly refuted. They joined forces with the the American Association of Pro-Life Obstetricians and Gynecologists to oppose the RU-486. They have a clear anti-abortion political agenda.
The organization is also anti-gay. The chairman of the National Physicians Center for Family Resources board, John Whiffen, said “It’s fairly well-accepted that smoking is not a good idea. It takes seven years off of your life. It appears that male homosexuality takes more than that off your life."
Anyone know more about this group? |
